Have you always wanted to be a teacher or education advocate? Do you enjoy working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment? Are you looking for a challenging career where you can make a difference in the lives of students? If so, COCC can you give you a strong foundation for your goal of teaching at the early childhood (birth-age 8), elementary, middle school or high school level.

The Education program at COCC provides the lower division coursework for students preparing for a career in early childhood through Grade 12 education. Students can complete their first two years of course work at here at COCC and then transfer to another institution at Junior status. Once students transfer they will be able to work toward their final degree and teaching licensure.

Advising is key to student success on this pathway as there are ongoing updates happening in this field related to courses recommended and required at partner institutions. Education faculty at COCC work closely with students to ensure they have the latest information about course offerings, field placement and work opportunities in Central Oregon as well as current information about the transfer process.

DEGREE OPTIONS

The Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer (AAOT) degree is designed so you can easily transfer to an Oregon public university to pursue a bachelor's degree. Students should check specific requirements at the institution they plan on attending. The AAOT is especially beneficial for education studies as it allows students to keep options open before deciding on a transfer school.

Education programs at each state institution vary dramatically. Contact an Education advisor at COCC for current program information for the teacher licensing institution of your choice. You should make a decision about your transfer plans early in your studies and request a current catalog from the school to which you plan to transfer.

CLASSES MAY INCLUDE

In addition to general education requirements we offer a variety of Education courses here at COCC that explore topics such as; an introduction to the field of education, music and movement in the classroom, science and technology, multicultural issues and the purpose and structure of education. The general education courses that students take are key to their success on the teacher licensure exams. The Education faculty look forward to working with students to recommend the best courses for exam preparation in history, science, speech and social science.
